Creative Call: ATLxSTHLM

Creative Call: ATLxSTHLM is an intercultural initiative and a festival aimed at using art and creative culture as a tool for empowerment among youth in the Stockholm suburban projects, as well as inspiring those working within the arts to question internal divisions, value systems and hierarchies. Creative Call also seeks to foster international dialogue and understanding between the US and Sweden surrounding topics of art, social struggles, hiphop and youth culture.

The project is planned as a five day long festival in Stockholm end of October/beginning of November 2012. A group of Atlanta artists who all represent Atlanta´s hiphop-influenced creative culture and artistic disciplines – for example painting, video and performance art, Graphic Design, turntablism and dance – will be invited to Stockholm to lead workshops, hold lectures, participate in cultural debates and panel discussions, and create public art installations. These activities will take place in Blå Huset in Tensta and Husby Träff in collaboration with local partners, as well as at culture house Kulturhuset and contemporary art museum Moderna Museet located in central Stockholm. The week’s events will culminate in a public event hosted by Kulturhuset, where participating artists will introduce their own works and performances as well as a projection of a mural painting created with local youth during the week.

The primary target audience for this festival is youth 15-25 years old living in Järva, who are rarely seen and heard within the established creative industry in Stockholm today. Secondary target audiences are youth from other parts of Stockholm, as well as artistic and cultural producers within the art scene.

The festival is initiated and directed by myself and happening in collaboration with curator Nicole Smith, Creative Culture Consultant Bem Joiner in Atlanta, organizations Megafonen and Förorten i Centrum, Kulturhuset and Moderna Museet, Tensta Against Crime, Tenstas Framtid and Blå Huset and Stadsmissionen in Tensta.

The artists who are preliminary confirmed for the festival are:
Dubelyoo (illustration/painting)
Fahamu Pecou (painting/performance/design/video)
Burn Unit (breakdancers)
DJ Lord (turntablism, member of Public Enemy)
Sir Tom Foolery (painting/illustration)

On top of the in-kind donations provided by the participating organizations and institutions, the festival is funded with grants from the American Embassy in Stockholm, Kulturförvaltningen and Kulturrådet. A website with more info about the project and the festival program will be up before the end of the summer.
